Example: Criticizing one of my paintings
The oil painting shown in the image below represents a painting style I have developed over the past decade following the uprising in Egypt in 2011.
This painting captures the anarchic chaos and violence that occurred during the uprising. To align my painting style with this concept, I chose to work Alla-Prima on a mid-sized canvas, using bold, chaotic brushstrokes. This approach enhances spontaneity, mirroring the disorder and intensity of an uprising.
To achieve consistency in the painting, I started with a layer of dark-value oil paint, then gradually built up the subject matter by adding lighter values until reaching the highlights on the figures' facial expressions which are the main focus of the painting. I used violet for the sky, the complementary color to the muddy yellow ground, to create a striking contrast. I worked intensely for around eight hours straight to achieve a tight yet dynamic composition, conveying the heat and intensity of an uprising.
